Unsung Hero Award

This year the New Jersey Hall of Fame introduces the Unsung Hero Award in recognition that there are many people from our state who deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, but who are not as well known as most of the inductees.

We received many nominations from our Expert Panelists, our Voting Academy and through our on-line nominating form and one nomination stood out. U.S. Army 1st Lt. Brian Brennan is a profile in courage and a role model for all of us in overcoming unthinkable personal challenges. The New Jersey Hall of Fame is proud to salute Lt. Brennan and all of the young men and women from New Jersey who are unselfishly serving our country. We are proud of all of them.

1st Lt. Brian Brennan

Growing up in Howell, New Jersey, Brian was always known for his exceptional work ethic and tremendous spirit. Friends and teachers continually comment on his desire to succeed and to do his best. An excellent student, he was also an outstanding linebacker in high school.

After graduating from Howell High School, Brian went on to complete his undergraduate work at The Citadel. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and became a Ranger.

While leading a patrol in Afghanistan on May 7, 2008, Brian was severely injured from an IED attack. Brian was found in cardiac arrest and was saved thanks to the quick response of fellow soldiers, but the news was not good. He had sustained an acute brain injury, a collapsed lung, internal bleeding, a ruptured spleen, multiple compound fractures of his left arm and a shattered femur. Even worse, both of his legs had to be amputated.

Flown to Walter Reed Hospital, Brian remained in a coma as he underwent multiple surgeries. His family remained at his side, making enormous personal sacrifices.

Near the end of a lengthy hospital visit by General David Petraeus, the General saluted Brian and spoke the Ranger motto “Currahee” a Cherokee word meaning “stand alone.” At that moment, Brian showed signs of movement. The General asked the officer with him to shout “Currahee” together, which they did and Brian began thrashing about in his bed. He had heard them and was coming out of his coma.

Now fitted with prosthetics and learning to walk again, Brian has made remarkable strides in his recovery due to his positive attitude, his tremendous determination and the unwavering support of his family. He has a long rehabilitation process ahead of him, but he stands today as a symbol of the sacrifices our young men and women are making for our country and as a role model.

The New Jersey Hall of Fame is proud to induct 1sts Lt. Brian Brennan as our first Unsung Hero. His name and story will forever be inscribed in our museum locations as they are built.
